Understanding the Life Cycle of Honeybees

The honeybee (Apis mellifera) has a highly organised life cycle that supports the entire colony’s survival and productivity.

Each bee goes through complete metamorphosis, with four distinct stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

The duration and role of each stage depend on whether the bee becomes a queen, worker, or drone.

Knowing the life cycle helps beekeepers monitor brood health, time inspections, and manage swarming or requeening effectively.

The Four Stages of Development

1. Egg (Day 1–3)

  • Laid by the queen at the bottom of a wax cell
  • Tiny, white, oval-shaped
  • Stands upright on Day 1, tilts over by Day 3
  • All fertilised eggs can become queens or workers
  • Unfertilised eggs become drones

2. Larva (Day 4–9 for workers)

  • After hatching, nurse bees feed larvae royal jelly, then a mix of pollen and nectar (bee bread)
  • Queen larvae are fed royal jelly throughout
  • Larvae grow rapidly and curl into a C-shape in the cell

3. Pupa (Capped Stage)

  • Cells are sealed with a wax capping
  • Bee transforms into its adult form (wings, eyes, legs)
  • Does not feed during this time

4. Emergence (Adult Bee)

  • Chews through capping and emerges from cell
  • Worker: 21 days total
  • Drone: 24 days
  • Queen: 16 days

Roles of Adult Bees

Queen Bee

  • Sole egg layer
  • Mates once early in life and stores sperm
  • Can live 2–5 years, though often replaced sooner
  • Releases pheromones to control hive cohesion

Worker Bee (Female)

  • Most abundant caste
  • Lifespan: 6 weeks (summer), up to 5 months (winter)
  • Tasks by age:
    • Days 1–3: Cleaning cells
    • Days 4–10: Nursing larvae
    • Days 11–20: Wax building, guarding, storing nectar
    • Day 21+: Foraging for pollen, nectar, water

Drone Bee (Male)

  • Mates with virgin queens in flight
  • No sting, does not forage or build comb
  • Ejected from hive before winter or during drought

Brood Pattern and Hive Health

  • Healthy brood: solid, even pattern of capped cells
  • Spotty or scattered brood may signal disease or queen failure
  • Eggs and larvae are indicators of queen presence
