PROPOLIS PRODUCTS

Creating Propolis Products: Tinctures and Extracts

This article is part of our complete guide to Starting Beekeeping in South Africa.

Propolis is a sticky resin collected by bees from tree buds and used to seal gaps in the hive. It’s known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In South Africa, propolis can be harvested and turned into tinctures or extracts for sale in health shops or to herbal product makers.

What Is Propolis Tincture?

A propolis tincture is an alcohol-based extract.

It’s used in:

  • Immune support products
  • Natural throat sprays
  • Skin applications for cuts or cold sores

How to Harvest Propolis

  • Use a propolis trap (plastic mesh placed on top of the hive)
  • Collect during warm months when bees are active
  • Freeze the trap, then flex to remove hardened flakes
  • Store propolis in a dry, airtight jar

Basic Tincture Recipe (Alcohol-Based)

Ingredients:

  • 25g raw propolis (cleaned)
  • 100ml food-grade ethanol (at least 70%)

Instructions:

  1. Grind propolis into small pieces
  2. Mix with alcohol in a glass jar
  3. Shake daily and let infuse for 2–4 weeks
  4. Strain through cheesecloth or coffee filter
  5. Bottle in amber dropper bottles

Non-Alcoholic Options

For customers avoiding alcohol:

  • Use glycerine or apple cider vinegar as the base
  • Shelf life is shorter (6–12 months)

Packaging and Labelling

  • Use dark glass bottles (10–30ml)
  • Label must include:
    • “Propolis Extract”
    • Alcohol percentage
    • Directions for use (e.g. 1–2 drops daily)
    • “Not for children under 1 year”
    • Batch number and contact details

Legal and Safety Notes

  • Tinctures are regulated as natural health products
  • Avoid medical claims unless registered
  • Some customers may be allergic—add warning

Selling Ideas

  • Sell at markets or through health shops
  • Bundle with honey and wax products
  • Target health-conscious or immune-focused buyers

Final Thoughts

Propolis tinctures are easy to produce in small batches, especially when you’re already harvesting wax and honey. With simple tools and clean preparation, you can offer a niche product that builds trust and adds a new income stream.
